<strong>ABSTRACT</strong><br />
<br />
<strong>Errors when judging an offside position in football are very frequent (1,2). In the last years, several scientific papers have tried to explain the causes for human errors (1,2,3,4,5,6,7). When a referee or an assistant referee misjudges an offside position, it is thought to be caused by a human error. A human error means to carry out incorrectly an action we are physiologically qualified for. The hypothesis to be studied in this paper is if when judging an offside position it is possible to attribute errors to humans or to the fact that human physiology and the technical media are not capable of detecting an offside position. The offside rule (8) has to be applied in real time, in zero milliseconds, in the precise moment when the ball is being passed, never 1 millisecond or even 1 millionth of a second later. This paper shows that the human being and the technological media are both physically and technically incapable of detecting an offside position in real time, in zero milliseconds. The results of this study show that when the ball is passed, the human eye (9,10) and brain (11) and the technological media (12) need some time to locate the at least four players (13) who intervene in an offside position. When those players are located, time has passed and they are never in the original position, when the ball was passed. Football players are trained for speed and acceleration to change their geographical position in the field when the ball is passed. Therefore, we cannot refer to a human error when an offside position is misjudged. The human being and the technological media will never be capable of detecting an offside position in real time, in zero milliseconds. The key of the offside position is a physical problem: time. The IFAB must abolish the offside rule.</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>INTRODUCTION</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The offside rule in football is one of the most controversial during football matches. Errors when judging an offside position are very frequent (1,2) and they are always attributed to human causes. In the last years, several scientific papers (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) have contributed in a very important way to understand why these errors happen. The human error has been related to optical errors based on the incorrect angle of view (1), the flash-lag effect (3) and eye movements (13). A human error means to carry out incorrectly an action we are physiologically qualified for. The problem is to find if the error has a human origin or not. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, the solution for this problem is a very simple one. The easiest thing is to propose a hypothesis to see if the problem has a physiological origin, if it is located in the eye and in the brain, or if it is just a simple physics problem. We must take into account that the result of a football match may change if an offside position is misjudged. And this is related to economic effects valued in hundreds of millions of Euros: football pools, advertising, the players’ and teams’ economic value, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>METHODS</strong> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The most important starting point is to understand what the offside position rule (8) demands. This rule requires the offside position to be marked when the ball is passed, in zero milliseconds; never 1 millisecond or one millionth of a second after. This rule requires knowing the exact geographical position of the players who take part in the offside position when the ball is being passed. Besides, it has to be decided if the player who is going to receive the ball takes part in the move in an active way. The elements in an offside position are the ball (8,13) (origin of the geographical horizontal line which delimits the offside position, because behind this line an offside position can never take place) and a minimum number of 4 players (8,13) (2 of the attacking team and the last 2 players of the defending team), although in most moves, there intervene more players. If the human eye and brain and the technological media cannot detect an offside position in zero milliseconds, it is obvious to deduce that they are all physiologically and technically incapable of detecting an offside position in real time, because the players are very fast (the players have speed and acceleration) and they accelerate to change their geographical position in the pitch so that they cannot be detected when the ball is passed. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>RESULTS</strong> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When the ball is passed, the physiological answer of the human body is the following one: the ocular fixation movements (10,14) (microsaccadic, tremor and drift) detect the visual perception of the exact moment when the ball is being passed and this signal starts all the oculoneuronal process to detect if there is any player in an offside position (but the ocular fixation movements need time to be carried out). This signal is sent to the brain via the optic nerve (which also needs time). The brain receives all the information (10,14,15), stores it (11), processes it (10,16,17) and sends an answer so that the oculomotor system is prepared to perform the necessary eye movements to detect all the players who take part in an offside position (this process takes time). The answer of the brain goes back to the eye through the oculomotor nerves (it takes time). Several saccadic (13) and ocular fixation movements (10) are performed to locate all the exact geographical location of the players who can take part in an offside position (this is the process which takes the longest). This information of the visual field is sent back to the brain through the optical nerve (it takes time). With all the information, the brain decides if a player is in an offside position or not (it takes time) and it sends a motor signal (the assistant referee raises the flag, the referee blows the whistle) in case there is an offside position (this process also takes time). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These eye movements are extremely brief (16), as well as the time the brain needs to process the information. The duration of ocular fixation (16) takes between 30 and 40 milliseconds. Saccadic latency (9) require from 80 to 135 milliseconds and duration of the saccadic movement (18,19) takes between 30 and 100 milliseconds. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some assistant referees use a technique to save time. They try to have in their visual field all the players who are likely to take part in an offside position and they just pay attention to the sound of the ball when it is passed. But the sound signal also needs time to be transmitted.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>DISCUSSION</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Previous studies have shown that when the ball is passed, the most common errors happen when the players (the forward player and the defender) run in opposite directions (7), the defender towards the centre of the pitch and the forward towards the contrary pitch. Football players are trained in speed and acceleration to change the relative positions in the football field. The time the eye and the human brain need, is the moment the players use to exchange their relative positions in the football field, so that they cannot be detected in the exact geographical position they had when the ball was passed. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A similar process takes place with technological media. In the precise moment when the ball is passed, any technological media has to send a laser, electrical, electronic or radio frequency signal to the CPU of a PC (12). But this process needs time (12), even if it is one millionth of a second. In order to save time, other devices could send at the same time a signal to the CPU with the exact geographical location of the players who can take part in an offside position. Technological media could receive these signals simultaneously, but the human eye is not physiologically capable to carry out that function. The CPU receives, stores, processes, interprets and in case there is an offside position, it sends an acoustic or visual signal (but this process also takes time).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>CONCLUSIONS</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The human eye and brain and the technological media cannot detect an offside position in zero milliseconds, in real time. The key of the offside position is a physical problem: time. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are witnessing the most massively known error in the history of humankind. Since the 19th century (the offside rule was introduced in 1866) thousands of millions of people thought, and they still think they can perceive and judge an offside position in real time, in zero milliseconds. The IFAB is facing a difficult problem: it has to abolish the offside rule.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<strong><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">INTRODUCCIÓN</span></strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">MÉTODOS</span></strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">RESULTADOS</span></strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">DISCUSIÓN</span></strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">CONCLUSIONES</span></strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

</div>
</li>
<li><div align="justify">
</div>
</li>
<li><div align="justify">
</div>
</li>
<li><div align="justify">
</div>

<strong><span style="font-size: 130%;"><em>INTRODUCCIÓN </em></span></strong></div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">

</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";"><span style="font-size: 130%;"><strong>Leyes Físicas y Fuera de Juego.</strong>
</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";"><span style="font-size: 130%;"><strong>Neurofisiología ocular y fuera de juego.</strong>
</div>
<div align="justify">
</span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">La realización de un movimiento sacádico precisa un tiempo, determinado por la latencia<em>(8)</em> (duración: 80-135milisegundos) y la duración del movimiento sacádico - generalmente tiene una duración<em>(9,10)</em> que oscila entre 30-100mseg: Un sacádico<em>(9)</em> de 40º requiere 110mseg, uno de 7,5º necesita 40mseg y uno de 2º 30mseg<em>(11)</em> -.</span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"></span></div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: 130%;"><strong><em>RESULTADOS </em></strong></span></div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><strong>1.
</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>

<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><strong>
</div>
<div align="justify">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><strong>4.
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">
<div align="justify">
</span></div>

<div align="center">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><strong><em>DISCUSIÓN </em></strong></span>
</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">

<div align="justify">

</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "georgia";">1. <strong>BACKGROUND</strong>: Offside errors in football are very frequent, but: the human eye and the brain are enabled physiologically to spot and judge an offside in football?</span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "georgia";">
2. <strong>METHODS</strong>: The offside rule in football must be applied by the referee and the assistant referees in the precise moment when the ball is played. To spot and judge this rule correctly is necessary to apply some Physical Laws and all the present knowledge on Ocular Neurophysiology. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: "georgia";"></span><br />
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "georgia";">3. <strong>RESULTS</strong>: The keypoint of the offside is to do it "in the precise moment when the ball is played". In that moment, the Referee and the Assistant Referees eye should have within their visual field five objects: the ball, two players of the attacking team and two players of the defending team. The human eye needs to perform saccadic and fixational movements in order to detect those players. Time is necessary to do that, but players make profit and change their position meanwhile. Conceptually, the offside requires stopping time to be applied correctly. But this is something impossible, even with technical media.</span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "georgia";">4. <strong>CONCLUSIONS</strong>: Nowadays, in real time, nobody can spot and judge an offside, not even using technological media. The offside is also incompatible with physical laws related to speed, space, time and acceleration. Conceptually, the offside requires stopping time to be applied correctly. But this is something impossible, even with technical media. A Referee does not make an error when he misjudges an offside: He is physiologically unable to judge it. </span></div>

<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "georgia";">On 1 July 2006 the new Laws of the Game(1) -IFAB, 2006-, modified at the 119th International Football Association Board -IFAB- meeting in London, England on 26 February 2005, comes into force.</span></div>

<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "georgia";">Now, the key factor in this rule application is that the player must be in the offside position (Fig. 1) exactly in the moment when the ball is passed from one of his team mates, not when he receives the ball or when the ball is en route between the players. Moreover, it is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position. A player in this position is penalised only if he is, according to the referee, involved in active play by interfering with play, interfering with an opponent, or gaining an advantage by being in that position.</span></div>

</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">In order to detect an offside in real time, without possibility of physiological or technological error, the current text of the Offside Rule demands the active participation some Physical Laws and all the present knowledge on Ocular Neurophysiology.</span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-size: 130%;"><strong>Physical Laws and offside rule.</strong></span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-size: 130%;"><strong></strong><span style="font-family: "times new roman";"><span style="color: red;">The offside rule is directly related to some physical concepts: speed, space, time and acceleration</span>. The human eye needs time to carry out the eye movements; players run at a different speed and they cover different spaces in the playing field as the eye tries to locate the exact position that those players had in the field "in the precise moment when the player who has the ball passes it". The acceleration in each players' race allows them to run a specific space in the pitch in some second tenths.</span></span></div>
<div align="justify">
<strong><span style="font-size: 130%;">Ocular Neurophysiology and offside rule.</span></strong></div>
<div align="justify">
<strong><span style="font-size: 130%;">
</span></strong><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">The peripheral retina gathers information that the brain uses to program the eye movements, basically from the parafoveal area<em>(5,6,7).</em></span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">In a football match the saccadic eye movements are those used between two players, to look at each other. In the offside, saccades are used when the ball has already been passed, to locate all the players that take part in a game (if they are all within the visual field).</span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">A saccadic movement needs time that depends on the latency<em>(8)</em> (duration 80-135 miliseconds) and duration of the saccadic movement<em>(9,10)</em> - between 30 and 100 msec: A 40º saccade<em>(9)</em> requires 110 msec, 40 msec for 7'5º and 30 msec for 2º saccade<em>(11)</em> -.</span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">The cognitive process to acquire and to process all the visual information of the object in the visual field and to decide which is the following object of interest is performed during ocular fixation<em>(12)</em>. The duration of ocular fixation can be extremely brief<em>(13)</em>: about 40 or even 30 msec.</span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">Eye accommodation is the capacity that the eye has to focus. Within the visual field, when we want to change the fixation point from a far object to another one located at less than 6 metres from us, the crystalline changes its convexity<em>(14)</em>. Normal latency as well as duration appear to have a large interindividual variability<em>(15)</em>. The normal response latency is of 394 ms (± 46 SD). In order to change the focus from a far to a close object, 640msec. are needed, and viceversa (from a close to a far object), it takes 560ms<em>(16,17).</em></span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">In an Offside game, if there are players located further than 6 meters away from the Referee or the AR and other players located at less than 6 metres, they have to carry out the Eye Accommodation.</span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">When the eye moves, several anatomical structures of the human brain(18,19) take part. The function of these structures is to process at the same time<em>(13,20)</em> all the information gathered during the fixations<em>(12)</em>, store it<em>(21)</em> and integrate it, as well as to program the following eye movements<em>(22)</em>. The combined presentation of auditive and visual stimuli reduces saccadic latency<em>(23)</em>. </span></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: 130%;"><strong><em>RESULTS</em></strong></span>
</div>
<div align="justify">
<strong><span style="font-size: 130%;"><span style="font-family: "arial";">1</span>. Why the human eye can´t spot an offside position?</span>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: red;">Five objects</span><em><span style="color: red;">(24)</span></em> <span style="color: red;">take part in an offside game</span>: <span style="color: #996633;">the ball, two attacking players and the last two players of the defending team</span>. Although more players can take part in some cases. </span></div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: #666600;">The offside rule requires that the human eye detects the exact geographical location of all the players that take part in a game,</span> <span style="color: red;">"in the precise moment when the ball is being passed<em>(1)</em>".</span> The fixational point of the Referee and the Assistant Referee (AR) should always be the player who is touching the ball, in order to know the precise moment when the ball is passed. This physiological situation requires that in the precise moment when the ball is being passed, the eye should carry out at least three saccades<em>(8,9)</em>: the first one to locate the player who the ball was passed, the second one to locate the second last defender and the third movement to locate the last defender (because sometimes the goalkeeper has left the goal and he is not the last defender).</span></div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: red;">After each saccade an eye fixation<em>(12)</em> is necessary to acquire and to integrate all the visual information of the player the Referee is interested in.
</span>
All that information must be processed<em>(12,13,20)</em> in the human brain and moreover to decide what players participate actively in a game of offside<em>(22,23)</em>.</span></div>
<div align="justify">
</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">The visual sequence is the following (Fig.2). The player who is playing the ball, and who is moving, is spotted thanks to smooth pursuit eye movements<em>(25)</em>. In a probable offside game, in the moment when the ball is passed, the Referee and the AR carry out a first fixation movement <em>(13)</em> (which lasts 30msec). Then, they get all the information, which is processed in the brain and at the same time the Oculomotor System prepares to carry out several consecutive saccades <em>(21)</em>, to detect the exact geographical position of all the players who take part in that game in the football pitch. After the first fixation movement, the first saccade <em>(8,10,11) </em>is carried out (duration: 80msec of latency + 30 msec of duration) which finishes with the second fixation. The second fixation (duration 30msec) is carried out to process the exact geographical location of the player who is going to receive the ball. After the second fixation, the second saccade starts (duration 30msec) which finishes with the third fixation of the second last defender (duration 30msec), to obtain visual information to know his relative position compared to the player of the opposing team who received the ball and to detect if there is an offside or not. If the goalkeeper is not the last defender, it is precise to carry out a third saccade (duration 30msec) and a fourth fixation (30msec) in order to locate the last player of the opposing team. All this process is 230msec long up to the third fixation and 290 msec long up to the fourth fixation (Fig.2. Game A: Offside position. Game B: There is no offside position. The visual sequence is the same in both games).</span> </div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">From the results in Table 1 we can deduce that the eyes of the Referee and of the AR need 230msec to detect the player who the ball was passed and the second last defender (28). Both of them may have changed their position in the field from the moment when the ball was passed. This distance will be of 76.05cm in 200msec if they started from a static position, depending on how the players speed up, or of 165.29cm if the players were already running.</span>

In position A, Fig.3, we see a player who is not in an offside position exactly in the moment when the ball is passed from one of his team mate, because he is 1 metre away from the second last defender. However, if both players run in opposite directions, 200msec later, in position B the forward player is located 52cm before the defender (they start the race from a static position); and in position C he is located 2.30m before the defender (both of them are running). In situation B and C the player starts from a correct position, but, 30msec later, when the Referee or the AR would finish the saccadic sequence, they would say that there is an offside, when it is not true. </span></div>

<br />
<ol>
<li><div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: #cc9933;">Some AR´s try to run next to the most advanced player who is playing the ball</span>. However the AR has to carry out saccades continuously to detect the moment when the ball is passed and the geographical location of the most advanced player. In the precise moment when the ball is being passed, the AR has to look again to that player, but during the period of the sequence fixation-saccade-fixation the player has the opportunity to change his position in the pitch. </span></div>
</li>
<li><div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: #cc9933;">The rest of the AR´s are just looking at the first player (most advanced player) and they try to listen to the sound of the kick to the ball in the moment when the ball is going to be passed. But this means an additional problem</span>, because the speed of sound is slower than the speed of light and during that time difference (during the time that takes the ear in perceiving the sound of the ball), the first player may have changed his position.</span> </div>
</li>
</ol>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-size: 130%;"><strong><span style="font-family: "arial";">3</span>. Which probabilities have referees and AR´s of detecting an offside?</strong></span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">Reckoning the probabilities that Referees and AR's have of "getting right" an offside can be quite a difficult job, because they depend on a series of too wide and maybe infinite variables. From these variables, we can underline: the attention on the game, the floodlighting, the luminosity or the colour of the players' t-shirts, the stripes on the grass, how the Refere and the AR <em>(4)</em> are located during the game, the insertion of other players in the game... However, in the last analysis, and despite all the variables, a player can be in an offside position or not. For the referee it is "heads or tails" and, as he is not capable of spotting it, he has to make a decision with just two possibilities. <span style="color: red;">That means that Referees and AR's always have 50% of probabilities to "get an offside right", but also 50% of errors.</span></span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: #cc9933;">It is possible to get the minimum distance which separes both players</span> (the first player and the second last defender) <span style="color: #cc9933;">so that the Referee and the AR's can detect an offside position with no visual error</span>. This distance is calculated in Table 2 for 230msec, the time that the eye needs to detect the two main players, taking into account their speed, if they start from static positions (start of the race speeding up) or if they are already running, and if they stand up statically (they do not move).</span> </div>

<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;">As we can see in Table 2, the minimum distance that separates these two players to detect an offside has to be bigger than 87.46cm (position 5). In this position the forward player runs to the opposite goal, speeding up from a static position and the second last defender is static, with no movement.</span>

<span style="font-size: 130%;"><strong>
</strong></span><span style="font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: red;">As it happens with the human eye, the technological media have to detect all the players who take part in this game</span><span style="color: #993300;"> </span><span style="color: #cc9933;">"in the precise moment when the ball is being passed". </span>That is why physics play such an important role evaluating the media. <span style="color: #993399;">The most important premise is time and any technological media cannot consume time to detect the players, because they can move within the pitch and they wouldn't be in the initial position</span> (when the ball was passed). So a media which does not consume time should be used. Nowadays there is not such media, because the electrical, electronical, radiofrequency or laser signal transmission needs time.</span>
</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: red;">Currently there is just a way to know if a player was or not in an offside position, without any visual error</span>. We can only affirm that there was an offside or not repeating and freezing the image on television, in the precise moment when the ball is being passed. <span style="font-family: "georgia"; font-size: 130%;"><strong><em>DISCUSSION</em></strong></span>
</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: red;"><strong>The key factor in this rule application is that the player must be in the offside position exactly in the moment when the ball is passed from one of his team mates, not when he receives the ball or when the ball is en route between the players <em>(1,29)</em>.</strong></span> <span style="color: #993399;">In order to achieve this axiom, it is necessary to stop time <em>(30)</em> and to locate all the players who take part in that game in zero milliseconds</span>. <span style="color: #33cc00;">If some time passes, although it is just 1msec, the players can change their position in the pitch.</span></span>
</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "georgia";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: red;">In an offside, the Referee and the Assistant Referee may have within their visual field five objects <em>(24)</em>:</span> <span style="color: #33cc00;">two attacking players, the last two players of the defending team and the ball</span>. The Referee and the AR's need time to detect an offside position, and this time is mainly defined by the saccades (latency and duration) and the eye fixations <em>(28,31)</em>. This is incompatible with the philosophy of football and with physics, because the players have speed and acceleration to change their position within the pitch in a specific amount of time, so that they cannot be located in the original position, exactly when the ball was passed <em>(28)</em>.</span></span>
</div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: red;">When an offside is misjudged, human mistakes are always mentioned. However, that is not correct.</span> To make a mistake means to carry out incorrectly an action that we are qualified to do, and that we can carry out correctly. <span style="color: #33cc00;">The Referee and the AR's are physiologically incapable of detecting an offside</span> <em>(28,31)</em>. That is why they can just "get right" some of the offsides, because they have 50% of possibilities of judging correctly an offside <em>(32)</em>.</span>

<span style="font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: red;">A Referee and an AR may find three different physiological situations in an offside game:</span></span>

<span style="font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: #33cc00;"><span style="color: #993399;">When all the players are located within the visual field,</span> at least 230msec are needed to locate the two main players in that game</span> (the player who the ball was passed and the second last defender).</span></div>

<li><div align="justify">
<span style="color: #33cc00; font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: #993399;">If there are players who are located more than 6 metres away or more than 6 metres closer to the Referee or the AR,</span> the eye needs to accommodate <em>(21)</em>, and this physiological situation needs more than 1 second.</span></div>
</li>
</ol>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-size: 130%;"><strong><span style="color: black;">Which is the problem of the offside rule that makes it impossible for the human eye and technological media <em>(33)</em> to detect it?</span></strong></span></div>
<div align="justify">
<span style="font-size: 130%;"><span style="color: #993399;">The problem is a notion error, because when it was created, nobody took into account the time needed to locate the different players who take part in the game.</span> <span style="color: #33cc00;">That time is fantastically used by the players to change their position in the pitch, so that they cannot be detected exactly in the precise moment when the ball is being passed.</span></span>

Me explicaré bien.</div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">Another of the scandalous aspects in football (soccer) is the positioning of the barrier when the referee toots a direct or indirect free kick near the rival area. We are in century XXI and this aspect of football nowadays I would say that it is of authentic joke.</span></div><span style="color:#993300;"><div align="justify">
I will explain you well.</div><div align="justify">
It does not have nothing else pretty in the football that a goal obtained in one free kick direct or indirect. The philosophy of football and the fair play within football must favour this type of goals.</div><div align="justify">
In one free kick, the next football player of the opposite team must be to a distance of 9.15 meters. Then, it is that there are people in this world who are enabled physiologically to know and to measure that from a point to another one there are exactly 9.15 meters without using no means of measurement, without using the called instrument of measurement “meter”. Those people are the football referees.</div><div align="justify">
And now I request to them that they do not come to me with the same trivialities from always, with the cheap wordiness that only serves to convince the fools. That yes it is possible to be measured with the steps of a person, who if the rays of the field of play can help, etc, etc… Absurd trivialities, own of cheaters than of serious people.</div><div align="justify">
To anybody it is happened to him to go to a butcher's and to request a kilo of veal fillets and that the butcher cuts the meat, he weighs it with the hand and he says to the client: here you has the kilo. Do you would buy that meat, without the butcher is it weighed? As this example one hundred thousand more could be put. Only the Conservatives of football are so “.........” that they can defend publicly, that a football referee is enabled to know where they are exactly the 9.15 meters.</div><div align="justify">
This rule only favours to the mediocre team. The best team is those than they have the players whom more ability they have to throw a free kick. Then, the opposite football players normally advance their position and when the free kick is sent, the barrier can be to 7 or 8 meters, never to 9.15 meters. And that, when the referee has had the ability to place it to 9.15 meters.</div><div align="justify">
It seems that football is designed for one or several people whom they tried that the referee was the “bad person” within a field of play. Many of the rules of football harm with great evidence the figure of the referee. The bad thing of this system is that the referees accept everything.</div><div align="justify">
But, good, he is better to accept all the equipment of football with humour. Every day, all the people of the world we used a system of measurement for something in particular, although it is only a glass to measure the amount of water. From here, I would propose to let use the complex systems of measurement. If a referee can measure 9.15 meters giving steps, if he continues walking and he walks million steps more, he could measure the exact distance from Paris to Rome.</div><div align="justify">
This of football sometimes can be of laughter, not to use another qualifying. They force the referees “<a href="http://beldamaruenda.blogspot.com/2006/05/can-human-eye-detect-offside-position.html">to see an offside</a>”, to measure 9.15 meters without using a meter, and nobody is scandalized. What will think of us about century XXII when all these trivialities have disappeared? </div><div align="justify">
As they say those of always. And, then, of what we would speak?</div><div align="justify">
Do you want the answer? Of football. Not of the benefits that the cheaters within a field of play obtain.</span></span></div>Francisco Belda Maruendahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18177646592184905371noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28454241.post-1151176771249474632006-06-24T20:46:00.000+02:002006-09-14T00:27:59.433+02:00Córner y Penalty en el fútbol.
<span style="color:#993300;">Whenever there is to corner kick in Football (soccer), the shade of penalty kick is very extended. In more of 50% of corners kick of a match, the defenders they commit penalty. When they are repeated the images by television from different angles we can detect that almost always there is a defender that commits penalty to a forward. It is pure statistic. Nevertheless, the referees do not indicate nor 1 penalty kick by each 100 corners kick sent. It is pure statistic.</span></div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">Why the referees almost never indicate penalty after corner kick? </span></div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">An answer with humour could be that the referees do not know nor have studied statistical.</span></div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">But I believe that the reasons can be very diverse: 1. That they really do not see them (¿); 2. That they do not dare to toot 4, 5, 6 penalties by match… and probably some more.</span></div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">There will be many fans, football players, journalists, referees and leaders of the world-wide football who are against this affirmation. He is very easy to speak or to write in mass media (those that they have that privilege) and to argue empirical criteria to be against to which I affirm in this article. Nevertheless, he is something very easy to study scientifically and to verify the result.</span></div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">But, good: so what? To anybody interests to him discover all the ridiculous and cheating aspects of this wonderful sport. Because, as many say: then, of what we would speak?</span></div><div align="justify"><span style="color:#993300;"></span> </div><div align="justify"><span style="color:#993300;"><a href="http://beldamaruenda.blogspot.com/2006/05/can-human-eye-detect-offside-position.html">Offside </a>or penalty not indicated, gives much money (during 7 days) to mass media.</span></span></div>Francisco Belda Maruendahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18177646592184905371noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28454241.post-1150759108086397262006-06-20T01:09:00.000+02:002006-09-13T20:18:44.870+02:00Sustituciones de jugadores durante un partido de fútbol en el siglo XXI.
<span style="color:#993300;">There is something more ridiculous situation in a football (soccer) match that the substitutions of players?</span></div><span style="color:#993300;"><div align="justify">
I will explain well, that soon comes those that to you puts green, with all class from childish insults, without reading the article.</div><div align="justify">
Football as we know it nowadays has been existing for approximately 140 years. The first time in history which substitutions of players are allowed during a football match was in the Mexico World Cup 1970:2 changes of players by match. In the Mexico World Cup 1986 the rule changed and since then 3 changes of players are allowed.</div><div align="justify">
Normally a professional football team is composed by 25 players. In a match, at the most 14 play. And during a championship a maximum of 16 or 18 players plays with assiduity.</div><div align="justify">
Which are the consequences of this ridiculous rule?</div><div align="justify">
1. Annoyance and badly acclimates in most of football players of football teams caused by the players who do not play.
2. Wasting of the money of the partners and subscribers of clubs. Money inverted in players who do not play. In the more important football teams it can suppose several tens of millions of Euros.
3. Loss of young players very good, that before the lack of opportunities for playing to be places setting their positions by players of prestige and quality (and in many occasions, nor so at least this is truth), see spend the years seated in the terracing seeing as their companions play the official matches.
4. Loss of great football idols that are forced to leave football prematurely for not to crawl in a field of play and to lose therefore the prestige which they enjoyed.
5. Loss of the show of a football match.</div><div align="justify">
It is totally outrageous that nobody, never, has criticized this aspect. The fans we paid an ticket to see a football show, although also we want that it gains our team. But it is evident that he is better in many occasions to give a rest of five, ten or fifteen minutes to a player so that later returns to the field of play and plays far better. It is ridiculous and depressing to see a football player, during the World Cup, to remain out of breath after a race of 30, 40 or 50 meters, during the second half of the football matches and to temperatures near 35º or 40º degrees Celsius in the field of play. Not to mention the physiological consequences for those players and the possibilities of recovery for the following matches, that as doctor also could reflect, but that can be the reason for another article.</div><div align="justify">
The Purists or Conservatives of football I would ask to them, is that football? Or it is to attend a show in the Roman circus of the time of the emperors. Is that show? Or it is to recreate in the humiliation of the human body submissive to the maximum exercise. Is that what we want the fans when we are going to see a football match?</div><div align="justify">
Then the answer goes to be that yes, in accordance with which it has been coming happening for more than 140 years. I am a romantic of football as total show but goes being who no, that I do not know if I will see that show sometimes because I am not within the FIFA nor so at least in the factual powers that exist within the framework of football: The journalists, the old stars of football and the trainers of elite.</div><div align="justify">
And, if this, that is obvious and an absolute triviality within the rules of football follows thus from century XIX, already of <a href="http://beldamaruenda.blogspot.com/2006/05/can-human-eye-detect-offside-position.html">Offside</a> nor we spoke, because the insults of the Conservatives and Purists would not take in appearing in any mass media of the world.</div><div align="justify">
Let´s see, why two substitutions as of 1970 and three as of 1986. Who give birth that idea, that norm, that change of norm as of 1986, and everybody as “little lamb” (not to use another worse word) we admitted like faith dogma. I do not know if you will remember, those who are more years old, than at the outset were frontal attacks against this norm. The Purists and Conservatives of football (always such) were against with all their force and declared the war to this norm (nowadays is ridiculous, truth? But their names are there, in the hemerotheques). Even, at the outset, the trainers did not do the changes allowed, or did only one. Even, the trainers were even criticized by the journalists when they made the changes allowed by the norm. This last one is really scandalous but the best thing of the journalism is that its articles or their word in radio or television it is reflected in the hemerotheques. And if anybody does not think me that he goes to them: he will already see how much he enjoys and how much he laughs.</div><div align="justify">
I do not know that you will think. But we return to make the question. Why not four, five or six substitutions during a football match? You are not scandalized, please. That I am not the devil nor an illiterate in football. Why not? I imagine that there would be two hundred million critics and hundreds of thousands of million commentaries. But, what would think of us within 30 or 40 years? They would completely see normal and to us like stupid ones by not to have implanted that rule before.</div><div align="justify">
And, why not to leave substitutions them they are free, just as in the basketball or the handball or other sports? Why not? What reasons are going to use or to allege those of always? Those Purists or Conservatives, who with their opinions and commentaries, cause that this wonderful sport and show, are sometimes weak and in more of the occasions boring and with lack of emotion. Although knowing history the humanity, those that are above think, think and decide and the others obey like stupid, as if it only existed that option and no more. Then not, that is not truth, the world as he is nowadays have created it the nonconformists, although always have been discredited at the outset, when they created his ideas.</div><div align="justify">
If during a football match the changes were free, entering and leaving the players to the field of play whenever the trainer believed it advisable for the interests of his team, it would increase the show and all the consequences before mentioned would be avoided.</div><div align="justify">
I am in favour of free substitutions, just as in the basketball, during a football match. I do not like to see a player who has made the maximum physical yield during a match and that his physical fatigue prevents to give the necessary yield him to his team. That football player can rest five or ten minutes and return again to the field of play to contribute to his team everything what can give of himself.</div><div align="justify">
Zidane could continue playing 4 years more at least. Fifteen minutes of Zidane on the field of play it is worth and it is paid more than a whole match of many of the players of first division. If the substitutions were free, many of these figures of football would not retire prematurely.</div><div align="justify">
Football will evolve without doubt. Sooner or later there will be free substitutions, is time only question. The Conservatives and Purists already will be scandalized. But, what will say within 15, 25 or 50 years, when this rule has been modified and the substitutions are free? With time they will see it with total normality and the others there will be lost wonderful years of football and show.</div><div align="justify">
<a href="http://beldamaruenda.blogspot.com/2006/05/can-human-eye-detect-offside-position.html">The human eye is not enabled physiologically to detect an Offside.</a> In the future, during a football match the substitutions will be free, how will be football in the future?</div><div align="justify">
In next articles they will be appearing critics to certain stupid aspects of present football, some of them of Police Court. Don´t miss its!</div><div align="justify">

Pekerman is not in offside.<div align="justify">No puedo negar que soy un gran aficionado al fútbol.
<span style="color:#993300;">I cannot deny that I am a great fan to football (soccer). And for that same reason I am very critical with this sport, because football is full of absurd and ridiculous “things”.
In January 2004, Jose Pekerman was Sport Director of the C.D. Leganés, an equipment of the Second Division of Spanish Football. After the march of Carlos Aimar like trainer of the Leganés, they proposed that Mr. Pekerman occupied the trainer position. Nevertheless, the National Committee of Trainers of Spain did not give its approval when not having credited 3 years like trainer of First Division in Argentina. Jose Pekerman had only trained a year to Argentinos Juniors. But, Pekerman already had gained three times the World Cup under-20 with the Argentina Selection (Quatar-95, Malaysia-97 and Argentina-2001), in addition to two South American Championships and a "Mundialito".
Nevertheless, few months later, Pekerman it was named Selecting of Argentina and today his equipment has gained 6-0 to Serb in the World Cup of football of Germany.
They do not seem to them absurd and ridiculous some rules or norms of present football. Pekerman does not fulfill certain requirements to train to an equipment of the Second Spanish Division and yes to direct to the Argentina Team Selection.
Today Argentina has demonstrated that it is the main favourite to raise itself with the title of World Cup of Germany 2006. A Selection that “plays in equipment”, directed by the skilful brain of Jose Pekerman. Congratulations Argentina.

All the sports have been adapting and modifying their rules so that the show is more and more attractive, or using modern technology to know the winner, to appreciate better the infractions of the rules or to give instructions to the sportsmen. Nevertheless, football is a Conservative sport, in which the introduction or modification of one rule needs many years: cards (yellow and red) and changes of football players during a match, are the two really excellent modifications in the last one hundred years of the history of football. It is not good that the leaders of world-wide football are Conservative, but is much worse than the football players, fans and journalists also are Conservative. Any attempt of change in football generates a controversy world-wide, appearing by all the corners of the world <strong>"celebrity"</strong> against any change.
Strangest it is than outstanding world-wide personalities, of recognized social prestige and political, very far from a Conservative ideal, when they think of football always do it with Conservative ideology and never under the prism of the change, a Progressive philosophy that it would make of football the sport king in all the corners of the world.

I believe that the FIFA is going to allow that the football players can drink water at any time of the match. The modification of this Rule during the championship deserves a congratulation to the FIFA. However, is ridiculous this Rule?
<span style="color:#993300;">To see a football match by television and to listen it also by the radio is everything a show. But, the journalists are the show. In a game of offside, some journalists say that there is offside, others say that there is not offside, and some say that they have not seen the game well. Soon, the game is repeated by television, and continues the doubts and the discussions. One, two, three, four repetitions from different angles and some journalists says that yes there is offside and others say that not. In the end, the fifth repetition of the game from a perfect angle clarifies all the doubts: There is offside. And it continues the discussion, mainly if the referee were mistaken. It is a wonderful show to see and to hear how the people discuss by an offside.
If they knew that… <a href="http://beldamaruenda.blogspot.com/2006/05/can-human-eye-detect-offside-position.html">the human eye is not enabled physiologically to detect an Offside</a>.

<span style="font-family:georgia;color:#993300;">FIFA in its web page says: “The generic concept of fair play is a fundamental part of the game of football. It represents the positive benefits of playing by the rules, using common sense and respecting fellow players, referees, opponents and fans”.
Making use of the common sense and respecting the referees, he is not ethical to force the referees to apply to a rule (Offside) for which are not enabled physiologically.
The FIFA must give example and practice the Fair Play. The Fair Play on the part of the FIFA must begin to analyze and to evaluate if the human eye is enabled to detect Offside.</span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#993300;">
<a href="http://beldamaruenda.blogspot.com/2006/05/can-human-eye-detect-offside-position.html">The human eye is not enabled physiologically to detect an Offside.</a> This is the most important conclusion of the scientific article:</span><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#993300;"> <a href="http://beldamaruenda.blogspot.com/2006/05/can-human-eye-detect-offside-position.html">Can the human eye detect an offside position during a football match?</a></span><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#993300;"> The objectives of the scientific articles that I have made in the area of Offside are the following: </span></div><span style="font-family:georgia;"><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">1. Preserving the fair play, widely promoted by the FIFA, under the premise of a higher degree of ethic exigency in the elaboration of the Rules of football.</span></div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">2. Protecting the figure of the referee and the assistant referees, so frequently insulted due to the application of a rule that they are not physiologically qualified to see.</span></div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">3. Avoiding violence generated by the incorrect application of this rule: aggressions to referees of regional categories, altercations of the fans during and after the football matches when there has been an incorrect offside, inopportune declarations that generate violence among football players and football managers, carried out by the unknowledge that it is simply impossible to apply scientifically this rule, although they try to justify it repeating the move on television.</span></div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">4. Solving the economical problem that raises quite frequently in the game of football lottery, after changing the result of a football match due to the incorrect application of this Rule.</span></div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">5. The modification of Rule 11 of the Football Regulations of the FIFA, about the offside, so that it can follow the precepts of the scientific method and the human eye will be capable of seeing it without any possible error.</span></div><div align="justify">
<span style="color:#993300;">6. The annulation of this Rule if it is not possible to find an addecuate scientific methodology for its application.

If we watched it from the point of view of the Referee it is very clear: <a href="http://beldamaruenda.blogspot.com/2006/05/can-human-eye-detect-offside-position.html">offside</a>. For a Referee or an Assistant Referee is very dangerous to give valid a goal in Offside, or to annul a legal goal by Offside. In both cases the image of the Referee and his Assistants can be damaged. But, What happens to those Offside sanctioned near goal area opposite? The answer is well simple, if badly they are sanctioned never we could know if that play could have finished in goal. A great dilemma that turns the Referee absolute protagonist. A power that can take to decide the final result of a football match, although is of unconscious form because <a href="http://beldamaruenda.blogspot.com/2006/05/can-human-eye-detect-offside-position.html">the human eye is not enabled physiologically to detect an Offside.</a></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="color:#993300;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="color:#993300;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="color:#993300;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="color:#993300;">Why the vaccine against the AIDS still does not exist? Ah! ¿Te has preguntado alguna vez por qué?

Ah! You have already tried it. And, what happened? He understood your explanation to first, to second, to third… or you finished your conversation speaking of the time. Do you have yourself bold sometimes to explain this rule to a woman? I already know that it is much more difficult, but that same long ago most interesting. And you are not one of those one they say: “They never understand offside”. Do you have asked yourself sometimes why? I yes, and know the answer: “Because the women are much more intelligent”.
